When I checked in they assigned me a larger room and I was very pleased. The best part was the bed, which was incredibly confortable. If there is anything to find fault at, is the bathtub, because you really had to raise your leg in order to get into it. But it was clean.
The personel was very helpful and you got an apple as you checked in ! It was a good value for the money, near everything I was interested in.

Staff was great. Meeting Matilda the cat in person after reading so much about her was pretty neat. The room was pretty roomy for NYC standards. I would definitely stay at the Algonquin again.

That said, don't let its age scare you away. It has been refurbished and its lobby is very comfortable and inviting, as is the historic Round Table in the restaurant just back of the lobby. The Blue Bar is adjacent -- very sophisticated and fun. Cabaret type entertainment is a regular feature at the Algonquin too, tho we didn't have time to enjoy it. Our well lit room was "filled" with a wonderful king size bed, no comfy chair or sofa, but a desk and chair. The bathroom was small, but the shower was great and everything was very clean and fresh. The staff was warm and helpful regarding any question or concern; the concierge in particular recommended a great Italian restaurant around the corner for a private birthday party. One elevator was under repair, one in operation, a minor problem. Times Square, subway and 5th Avenue were all nearby.

The Algonquin is a wonderful place - full of character and charm. It is part of a memorable NYC experience. I don't know that I would ever stay anywhere else.
